South African Government Statement on Attacks in Gaza

Pretoria - The South African government condemns the attacks and counter- attacks in Gaza during which seven Palestinian civilians were killed by the Israeli Defence Force and twelve Israeli soldiers wounded by Palestinian militants.

Deputy Minister Pahad said, "violence begets violence and in that context there will be no military solution to the current challenges facing Israel and Palestine. Such acts cannot deliver the peace and security yearned for by both Palestinians and Israelis."

The South African government urges both parties to desist from engaging in activities that would impact negatively on the creation of the climate for the forthcoming Palestinian elections and undermine the prospect for peace and security for the peoples of both Palestine and Israel.

The South African government urges both sides to commit themselves to the roadmap as the only viable option for the creation of a long lasting peace and security for the peoples of Palestine and Israel.
