Former South African Ambassador to Morocco Dies

Pretoria - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was shocked and saddened by the death of former South African Ambassador to Morocco, Dr. Mohamed Moosa Motala who passed away after a long illness at his Pietermaritzburg home on Friday 20 May 2005. Dr. Motala was buried today, Friday in Pietermartizburg.

Dr. Motala, 84 years old, was South Africa's Ambassador to Morocco from 1996-1999. A Medical Practitioner by profession, the late Dr. Motala was:

  • A former Chairperson of the Natal Indian Congress
  • Member of the Executive Council of the UDF Natal Midlands Region of the UDF
  • Member of the ANC, Kwazulu-Natal
  • Chairperson of the Indian Centenary Trust
  • Chairperson Ghandi Memorial Committee
  • And an Assessor for the SA Medical and Dental Council.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends the heartfelt condolences of President Thabo Mbeki, the government and people of South Africa to his widow, Rabiya and the two children Shireen and Irshad, said Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe.

"We express our conviction that they will continue to draw strength and inspiration from the knowledge that the people of South Africa share in their sorrow and grief. Indeed the thoughts and prayers of all the people of South Africa, including those of South African envoys abroad reach out to them" concluded Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe.
