Deputy President Jacob Zuma to lead South African Delegation
to 13th NEPAD Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee Meeting,
Sharm-El-Shaik, Egypt, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 Pretoria - South African Deputy
President Jacob Zuma will depart for Sharm-El-Shaik, Egypt on Monday, 18 April
2005 where he will lead a senior South African delegation to the 13th Meeting
of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee Meeting scheduled
for Tuesday, 19 April 2005. The Heads of State and Government Implementation
Committee Meeting will be hosted by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and chaired
by Nigerian President Olusegan Obasanjo. The Meeting will receive a NEPAD
Progress Report by Professor Wiseman Nkhuhlu that will review progress since the
last Heads of State and Government Committee Meeting hosted by Algeria on 23 November
2004. The report will have a particular emphasis on: - The NEPAD/African
Union (AU) integration process;
- Co-operation with international partners
including the G-8, the Commission for Africa, and the Africa Partnership Forum;
- National and sub-regional integration of NEPAD priorities for the attainment
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and
- The enhancement of capacity
of Regional Economic Communities
The Chairperson of the African Peer
Review Mechanism (APRM) Panel of Eminent Persons, Mde A Savane of Senegal, will
also present a report of the APRM. In this regard, twenty-four countries have
now acceded to the APRM. The review of the first four countries to be assessed
in the first phase - Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Mauritius will be finalised soon.
South Africa will be reviewed during the first half of 2005. In addition,
the meeting will look at the interaction between the African Union and the Commission
for Africa, preparations for the forthcoming G-8 Summit to be hosted by Britain,
and synergies between NEPAD and the Millennium Development Goals. Issued
