President Thabo Mbeki offers condolences to the leaders of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan

Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki today, Sunday 9 October 2005, conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the South African government and people to the leaders of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, following the devastating earthquake that struck the three countries on Saturday 8 October 2005.

"Please accept the deepest sympathies of the South African government and people following the tragic earthquake on Saturday during which thousands are reported dead, maimed and injured."

"It is indeed tragic that your region has again experienced a natural disaster of this magnitude within a short while of the devastating Tsunami that struck in December last year."

"Our thoughts are with the peoples of your countries, especially those who have lost their loved ones, during this time of national mourning."

"South Africa stands ready to assist the government and peoples of your countries in whatever manner possible, " concluded President Mbeki.
