President Mbeki Extends Condolences on the Passing Away of Pole John Paul II

President Thabo Mbeki today, Saturday, 2nd April 2005 on behalf of the government and people of South Africa extended country's deepest sympathies to the Holy See on the passing away of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II.

" The government and the people of South Africa acknowledge the cardinal role that His Holiness played in his efforts to strengthen the moral fibre among Catholics, people of all faiths and humanity in general.

We express our appreciation for the role played by His Holiness in pursuit of global peace, development and co-operation among nations of the world including his support for Africa's development and renewal.
We express our conviction that even though his leadership role will be sorely missed, the Catholic fraternity and faith will draw strength and inspiration from his teachings and guidance.

On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Holy See and the Catholic fraternity at home and abroad, " said President Mbeki
