Message from President Mbeki to mark the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr

President Thabo Mbeki today joins the rest of South Africa in saying to our Muslim Community - Eid Mubarak.

The President noted that for the past month Muslims throughout the world have been fasting daily from dawn to sunset.

He added: "For Muslims, the month of Ramadan helps inculcate values of personal discipline, patience, sacrifice and giving. It is a month which serves as a means of developing empathy for the poor and destitute and reaching out to the needy in all communities in the true spirit of Ubuntu."

President Mbeki further expressed his confidence in the fact that all would have "emerged from this period of abstinence, deep reflection and sacrifice spiritually renewed, and fortified" and said that, with the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, he takes this opportunity to wish the Muslim community well at this important time.

"Eid Mubarak and may your day be filled with joy and happiness," he said.
