President Thabo Mbeki Offers Support to Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa

Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki today, Tuesday 6 December 2005, extended the condolences of the South African government and people to the government and people of Tanzania following the horrific earthquake on Monday, 5 December 2005.

In a message of support to his counterpart, Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa, President Mbeki said, "Please accept the deepest condolences of the South African government and people following the massive earthquake on Monday, 5 December 2005 in which many are reported dead and injured as well as destruction to property and infrastructure."

"The South African government stands ready to assist in whatever manner possible within its limited capacity."

"The thoughts and prayers of the government and people of South Africa reach out to the government and people of Tanzania and in particular bereaved families, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery," concluded President Mbeki.
