Media Statement on the Death of President Eyadéma of Togo

President Thabo Mbeki on Sunday, 6 February 2005 extended South Africa's heartfelt condolences to the government and the people of Togo on the passing away of President Gnassingbe Eyadéma.

"In this regard our thoughts and prayers reach out to the family of President Eyadéma in particular, the government and peoples of Togo during this time of bereavement" said President Mbeki.

In this context the South African Government joins and endorses the call by the African Union for the Togolese authorities to return to the constitutional provisions governing succession of the Head of State.
