South Africa to Accord Ceremonial Sendoff to Former Ugandan President Milton Obote

Tshwane - In a humble gesture of solidarity with the government and people of Uganda, the South African government on Wednesday, 12 October 2005, decided to accord to the late former President of Uganda, Milton Obote a full ceremonial sendoff on Saturday, 15 October 2005

This follows the decision of the Ugandan government to accord the late former President a State Funeral in Kampala.

President Obote's mortal remains will first be flown to Zambia where he had spent the last years of his life in exile, before being flown to Uganda for the State Funeral.

In a message of support, President Mbeki on Wednesday, 12 October 2005, conveyed the deepest condolences of the South African government and people to the government and people of Uganda on the death of former President Obote.

President Mbeki said, "The thoughts and prayers of the South African government and people go out to his family and the people of Uganda during this moment of grief."

President Mbeki also remembered former President Obote for the critical role in played in leading Uganda to independence from British colonialism in 1962.
