Minister Dlamini Zuma Extends South Africa's Condolences on the Death of British MP Robin Cook

Tshwane - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today, Sunday 7 August 2005 conveyed South Africa's sincere condolences following the untimely death of British MP and former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

"The Government and people of South Africa were saddened and shocked to learn of the untimely death of that stalwart of British politics Robin Cook.
"We were privileged and honoured to share many trenches with Robin Cook particularly during the struggle to rid our country of the scourge of racism and apartheid.

"It is in no small measure, that the dawn of peace, democracy and justice in SA is in part a consequence of the selfless sacrifices that people like Robin Cook made.

"With a new democracy in place in South Africa, Robin Cook played a major role in strengthening and consolidating bilateral political and economic relations between South Africa and Great Britain as well as a pioneering role in developing solidarity between Africa and the G8. "With the passing away of Robin Cook the people of SA have indeed lost a dear friend and a hero.

"On behalf of President Thabo Mbeki we join the entire membership and leadership of the British Labour Party, the government and people of Great Britain and in particular his widow, children, family and friends in lowering our banners in respect and solemn memory of that finest son of the people of Great Britain, Robin Cook", concluded Dr Dlamini Zuma.
