President Thabo Mbeki to Address the UN Millennium Review Summit New
York - South African President Thabo Mbeki will join UN Secretary-General Kofi
Annan, US President George Bush and other international leaders to address the
UN Millennium Review Summit scheduled for Wednesday 14 September 2005 in New York.
Other speakers include the co-chairs of the Summit, the Prime Minister and President
of Sweden and Gabon respectively. President Mbeki, accompanied by Mrs. Zanele
Mbeki, is currently leading a South African Government delegation including among
others Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma to the UN Review
Summit and the 60th Session of the Un General Assembly scheduled for this week. The
UN Millennium Review Summit is expected to take stock of progress achieved in
five years since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration Goals as agreed to
by world leaders in the year 2000 including reduction of poverty and infant mortality
rate as well as the universal primary education. The UN Millennium Review
Summit is expected to adopt an outcome document that commit countries to action
in the inter-related fields of development and poverty eradication, peace and
security and human rights which are the three pillars of the UN system. In
a related summit, President Mbeki will address the International Conference on
Financing for Development scheduled for later during the day at the UN Headquarters. A
series of bilaterals are also on the cards for President Mbeki and his delegation
including discussions with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Prime Minister
of Canada, Paul Martin, President of Mexico Vicente Fox Quesada; President Jorge
Sampaio of Portugal and the UN high Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres. President
Mbeki and Minister Dlamini Zuma will also attend the strategic trilateral India-Brazil
and South Africa meeting with Presidents of Brazil Lula da Silva and Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh of India. This will be followed by an African Union Peace
and Security Council meeting to discuss the current situation in Cote d' Ivoire.
South Africa is the current Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council. Issued
