Statement Regarding Alleged South African Citizen Arrested in
New York Pretoria - The Department of Foreign Affairs has taken note
of media reports of the arrest of an alleged South Africa in New York on charges
of arms smuggling earlier this week. The Department of Foreign Affairs has
yet to be informed of this arrest by the United States authorities. In terms of
the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the detainee must request contact
with the diplomatic/consular mission upon his arrest. However, the Consulate
General in New York is in touch with the relevant authorities in this regard and
will continue to seek confirmation of this arrest whereupon the necessary arrangements
will be made for consular access to the detainee. Department of Foreign
