Update on South Africans Affected by Hurricane Katrina

Tshwane - The Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to advise of the following regarding South Africans affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, USA:

  • The Department of Foreign Affairs has been dealing with calls from the public, enquiring of the whereabouts of family members and friends with whom they have not had contact since the devastating hurricane Katrina last week Monday;
  • The South African Embassy in Washington is in constant touch with the United States State Department in respect of our citizens in the affected area
  • Over the weekend a total of 17 South Africans had been put on the emergency management system list. By today, 13 of these were successfully contacted and/ or have made contact with their families
  • Accordingly, at this stage the Department is following up on the issue of 4 South Africans that remain on the emergency management system list
  • The Department of Foreign Affairs will continue to liaise with affected families in this regard.
