President Thabo Mbeki's Message of Condolences to the Viljoen Family

We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Mrs Marietjie Viljoen who died at the Muelmed Hospital in the City of Tshwane, October 5. She died at the age of 88 after a short illness.

Mrs Viljoen, wife of former State President, Marais Viljoen, will be greatly missed by all who knew her for the unwavering devotion she displayed to her family, friends and community. Mr Marais Viljoen was the president of South Africa from June 4, 1979 until September 3, 1984.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends in this hour of need.

On behalf of the people and government of South Africa, we express our sincere condolences to the Viljoen family for the loss of their dearest mother and granny.

Mrs Marietjie Viljoen is survived by her husband, her only daughter Elna and a grandson, Viljoen.
