MRS S M CAMERER (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

(1) Whether any contact has been made by any South African diplomatic representative with J Neethling who is currently serving a two-year sentence for drug trafficking at Bordelais Prison Dennery, St Lucia W. I.; if not, why not; if so, on what dates;

(2) whether any arrangements have been made for the repatriation of the prisoner; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details.

REPLY:

(1) Yes. On 19 December 2004 by officials from the South African Embassy, Kingston, Jamaica.

(2) No. South Africa does not repatriate prisoners sentenced abroad. A prisoner is either deported by the host country or family members/the community or benefactors are requested to pay the cost of return to South Africa of a released prisoner.
