President Thabo Mbeki to deliver Opening Remarks at the Second General Assembly of the Africa Forum, 31 October 2006, 10H00, Westcliff Hotel, Johannesburg

Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki will deliver the opening remarks at the 2nd General Assembly of the Africa Forum to be held on Tuesday, 31 October 2006 at 10h00 at the Westcliffe Hotel, Johannesburg. The theme for this session of the General Assembly is "Mobilising International Support for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development in Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Côte d'Ivoire".

The Africa Forum is chaired by the former President of the Republic of Mozambique, Joaquim Alberto Chissano, with former President Nelson Mandela as its Patron. Twenty former African Heads of State and Government are expected to attend.

The Africa Forum held its inaugural meeting in Maputo, Mozambique in January 2006. The Africa Forum (AF) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that will actively participate at an international level to serve the cause of Africa. The membership of the AF is open to leaders who qualify in terms of democratic credentials and who have made meaningful contributions to promote and sustain democratic governance, not only in their own countries, but also in their sub-regions and the African continent.

The core function of the Africa Forum is to play a meaningful advocacy role both internationally and on the African continent through;

  • Promoting democratic principles and values in Africa;
  • Promoting peace, security and stability in Africa to support the AU and its NEPAD initiative; and
  • Identifying creative solutions for key challenges in Africa.
