Media Statement on President Mbeki's Arrival in Sudan for the AU Summit

President Thabo Mbeki, earlier on Monday morning arrived in Khartoum, Sudan for the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled from Monday - Tuesday, 23 -24 January 2005.

On arrival at Khartoum International Airport, President Mbeki was received by the First Vice President, of the Republic of Sudan, Salva Kirr who is also the President of the Government of South Sudan. The South African Ambassador to the Sudan, Amb. Jan Mampane was also present to officially welcome President Mbeki to Sudan.

At the Summit, which begins today, President Mbeki will be supported by Foreign Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma who has just concluded participation in the AU Executive Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting.

President Thabo Mbeki will participate in the Summit within the context of South Africa's commitment to building and strengthening the institutions of the African Union, with a view to the consolidation of the African Agenda.

AU Heads of State and Governmemt will receive and deliberate upon recommendations of the 8th Ordinary session of the AU Executive Council of Foreign Ministers that discussed amongst others the following:

  • NEPAD,
  • African Court on Human and People's Rights,
  • *Language Plan of Action for Africa,
  • Migration on the African continent,
  • *Political and economic integration of the continent,
  • Africa - France Summit,
  • Africa Diaspora Process,
  • Palestine and the Middle East,
  • OAU/ AU Treaties, and
  • AU's Budget.

President Thabo Mbeki and Minister Dlamini Zuma are expected to return to South Africa on Wednesday, 25 January 2006 ahead of Minister Dlamini Zuma's scheduled hosting of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Troika (South Africa - Cuba - Malaysia) in Hermanus, outside Cape Town scheduled from Thursday - Friday, 26 - 27 January 2006.
