Minister Essop Pahad leads South African Delegation to Bolivia

Pretoria: Minister in the Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad is currently in Bolivia leading a South African delegation as a follow- up visit to President Evo Morales's visit to South Africa in January 2006. Dr Essop Pahad is accompanied by Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica, Speaker of the National Assembly,Ms.Baleka Mbete, Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice and Constitutional Development respectively, Ms Sue van der Merwe and Adv. Johnny de Lange.

The visit to Bolivia comes within the context of South Africa's commitment to strengthening bilateral, political and economic relations between the two countries and is aimed at advancing the developmental agenda of the South.

Then President Elect, Evo Morales visited South Africa in January 2006 shortly after his electoral victory where he held discussions with President Thabo Mbeki on a wide range of political and economic issues.

In this regard the visit to Bolivia by the delegation is aimed at exploring possibilities for co-operation in the following areas:

  • Co-ordination of the work of the Presidencies of the two countries.
  • Co-operation and sharing of experiences in the workings of Constitutional Assemblies.
  • Sharing of experiences on Minerals and Energy Policies.

The delegation will return to South Africa on 20 July 2006.
