Minister Nqakula Departs for East Africa as Facilitator of Peace in Burundi

Tshwane - South African Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula, Facilitator of the Burundi Peace Process today Wednesday 10 May 2006 departed for Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi where he will consult with all role players on a way forward for the Burundi Peace Process.

President Thabo Mbeki, on Sunday 7 May 2006, appointed Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula as Facilitator of the Burundi Peace Process following a request from the leadership of the East African region of the African Union for South Africa to continue with mediation efforts in Burundi.

Ambassador Kingsley Mamabolo, South African Special Envoy to the Great Lakes, will provide support to the Facilitator, as he executes his mandate to serve the people of Burundi in particular and the East African region in general to create a peaceful, stable and democratic Burundi.

South Africa reiterates its commitment to work with the regional leadership, the government and people of Burundi and the leadership of the PALIPEHUTU/FNL in their efforts to find a sustainable solution to their current political challenges.

During this process it is envisaged that a regional technical team will be established to provide support to the Facilitator.
