Preliminary Response of President Thabo Mbeki to the Announcement of Provisional Election Results in the DRC

Cape Town - South African President Thabo Mbeki today, Thursday 16 November 2006, in his preliminary response, noted the announcement of provisional Presidential election results in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of South Africa, the President congratulated the DRC's Independent Electoral Commission for organizing both the first and second round of the Presidential elections including the regional elections.

Similarly the President congratulated the people of the DRC who came out in their numbers to participate in this historic process as part of efforts to shape the destiny of their country.

At this stage, South Africa will await the outcome of the final confirmation of the Presidential elections by the DRC's Supreme Court before a full and comprehensive response to the results is made.
