South African Government responds to the Military Coup in the
Republic of the Fiji Islands Pretoria - The South African Government has
noted the unconstitutional developments in the Republic of Fiji Islands today,
Tuesday 5 December 2006. In this regard, the South African Government joins
the international community in expressing its unequivocal condemnation of the
unconstitutional transfer of power in Fiji. We are of the conviction that
unconstitutional transfers of power can never be a substitute for the rule of
law and constitutionality. The South African government therefore urges
the people of Fiji to join hands during these trying moments in the history of
their country to ensure an immediate return to the rule of law, democracy and
constitutionality. Issued by Ronnie Mamoepa on 082 990 4853 Department
