Former President of Ghana Jerry Rawlings Involved in Car Accident in South Africa, 20 April 2006

Johannesburg - Former President of Ghana Jerry Rawlings, his wife Mrs Nana Rawlings as well as Ali Hassan Mwinyi, former President of Tanzania, were involved in a car accident in Johannesburg on Thursday, 20 April 2006. The two former Presidents were not injured in the accident but were admitted to Morningside Clinic in Sandton for observation. They were later discharged.

Mrs Nana Rawlings was however slightly injured. She was also admitted for observation and later discharged.

The two former Presidents are in South Africa to attend a two-day seminar of African former Heads of State hosted by Wits University to discuss a number of issues of concern to the African continent. Their motorcade was part of a convoy carrying a number of former heads of state when their cars were involved in a collision.

President Thabo Mbeki was kept abreast of these developments.
