Deputy Foreign Minsiter Aziz Pahad to attend International Ministerial Working Group Meeting on Côte d'Ivoire

Pretoria - South African Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad will today, Friday 19 May 2006, attend the 7th session of the International Ministerial Working Group (IWG) Meeting on Côte d'Ivoire in Abidjan.

Deputy Minister Pahad jetted out of South Africa on Thursday evening 18 May 2006.

The 6th Ministerial level meeting of the IWG was held on 20 April 2006 during which the report of the Mediation Group was examined and a briefing received from Prime Minister Banny, the Chairman of the National Programme for Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (PNDDR), the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the acting President of the National Commission for Supervision of Identification (CNSI).

In view of the progress achieved in the implementation of the roadmap, the Group expressed concern regarding the delays in the implementation of the disarmament process and national identification.

It is expected that the implementation of the simultaneous disarmament and national identification processes to be undertaken in terms of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1633 (2005) will be the main issues on the agenda of the 7th session of the IWG.
