WEST- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Sue van der Merwe as part of the

efficient service delivery. In this regard, Deputy Minister Van der Merwe
held discussions with the current leadership of the Central Karoo Municipality:
Mayors, Councilors, Municipal managers and community representatives in office,
following the 1 March local government elections. Deputy Minister Van der
Merwe has over the past two days, in consultation with the Municipal leadership
reviewed progress on undertakings made during her previous visit in November 2005
and also discussed the following; - Assessment of the Local Economic
Development strategy for the Municipality
- Progress on key anchor projects
in the district
- Challenges in providing services, developing infrastructure
and promoting sustainable employment opportunities
Deputy Minister
Van der Merwe, at the conclusion of her two-day visit announced: "I am encouraged
by the levels of service delivery in the district since I was here last November.
Much as you have done a lot to improve the lives of the ordinary people in the
area of housing, water and sanitation, I believe there is a lot that still needs
to be done. We need to focus more on arresting the high levels of unemployment
and deal effectively with equally alarming illiteracy rate within the communities". Inquiries:
