President Mbeki Sends Condolences to Ellen Khuzwayo's Family

President Thabo Mbeki has received the sad news of the death today of one of South Africa's finest daughters, the writer and activist Dr Ellen Khuzwayo.

Dr Khuzwayo will be remembered for her outstanding role in the struggle against apartheid and for her contribution to the development of South African literature.

She became one of the path-finders of our constitutional dispensation when she served her country and people as one of the first 490 democratically elected members of the National Legislature between 1994 and 1999. Accordingly and in recognition of her sterling contribution to society, former President Nelson Mandela honoured Dr Khuzwayo with The Order for Meritorious Service in 1999.

President Mbeki expressed his heartfelt condolences to Dr Khuzwayo's family and friends.
