South African government condemns latest Israeli attacks in Lebanon
Pretoria - The South African government continues to be deeply concerned about the continuing escalation of the crisis in the Middle East region.
The collective punishment of the Israeli government against the Palestinian and Lebanese people is contrary to international law and the Geneva Convention. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has referred to the military actions of the Israeli government as “war crimes.”
The South African government condemns the recent killing of four United Nations observers to which the United Nations Secretary General has referred to as “apparently calculated” and the carnage in Qana, (in which an estimated 37 children, many women and elderly were killed and countless others wounded,) as a tragic reflection of what has continuously and systematically been happening in the Gaza and Lebanon.
Entire villages and towns have been destroyed. Such military attacks against civilian targets in densely populated areas and the massive destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented in recent times.
Such destruction and heavy casualties (involving mainly civilians) and the catastrophic humanitarian crisis cannot justify any security concerns.
The danger of an unprecedented outburst of anger throughout the region and a regional war becomes an increasing reality as every day passes. This threatens regional and international peace and security.
The South African government calls on the United Nations Security Council to accept its responsibilities and to condemn Israel’s collective punishment, which is contrary to all international law and the Geneva Convention and demands an immediate ceasefire.
The South African government remains convinced that the only way for a comprehensive solution is a ceasefire without delay and followed by negotiations that will ensure lasting peace in the region. Such a peaceful settlement must be a viable Palestinian State based on the 1967 borders and the acceptance by all countries in the region of internationally recognised borders for every neighbouring country, including Israel.
