South African government welcomes UN investigation into the assassination of Lebanese Cabinet Minister, Pierre Gemayel

Pretoria - The South African government has welcomed the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) decision to investigate last week's assassination of Lebanese Minister for Industry Pierre Geyamel in Beirut, Lebanon on Tuesday, 21 November 2006.

On the Lebanese National Day, Wednesday 22 November 2006 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad said, "Our thoughts and prayers have reached out to the family of Mr Geyamel, the government and peoples of Lebanon over this period that should have been one of celebration." He noted that this attack comes at a time when Lebanon has just emerged from a devastating war. "We encourage Lebanese citizens to be unified - and not divided - at this critical time of post-conflict reconstruction," Deputy Minister Pahad said.

The South African government reiterates its condemnation of all forms of terrorism, and maintains that military solutions cannot lead to the resolution of political problems.
