Minister Dlamini Zuma to lead South African Delegation to SADC Ministerial Meeting

Pretoria - South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will depart for Maseru, Lesotho today, Sunday 13 August 2006 where she will lead a senior South African government delegation to the SADC Ministerial meeting scheduled from Tuesday - Wednesday, 15-16 August 2006.

Minister Dlamini Zuma's participation in the Council of Ministers meeting comes within the context of South Africa's commitment to consolidate the African agenda through among others participation in SADC institutions.

In this regard, the Ministerial meeting is expected to deliberate upon and make recommendations to the SADC Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Thursday - Friday, 17-18 August 2006 on the following issues:

  • Continental integration including the operationalisation of the African Union and the implementation of NEPAD;
  • A review of the implementation of Council Decisions;
  • Receive reports from the:
    • Integrated Committee of Ministers;
    • Chairperson of SADC;
    • Executive Secretary of SADC;
    • Joint meeting of SADC Ministers responsible for Agriculture, Livestock and Health on Avian Influenza;
    • Meeting of Ministers of Finance and Investment;
    • Meeting of Ministers of Trade;
    • A progress report on the Financing, Design and Construction of the new SADC Headquarters; and
    • Preparations for the international conference on poverty alleviation.

President Thabo Mbeki will lead the South African delegation to the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for Thursday - Friday, 17-18 August 2006.
