Statement by President Thabo Mbeki on the Death of Minister Stella Sigcau

The Government has received with great sadness the news of the passing away of Ms Stella Nomzamo Sigcau, the Minister of Public Works on Sunday 7 May in Durban. She had been admitted to hospital two weeks previously with cardiac and kidney-related complications.

Minister Sigcau devoted her working life to the service of the people of South Africa. In 1994 she had been appointed Minister of Public Enterprises under former President Nelson Mandela. In that capacity she oversaw the exceptionally challenging project of transforming the Ministry and department. Appointed in 1999 as Minister of Public Works, she was into her second term in charge of this portfolio on her death.

In her Ministerial roles, Ms Sigcau made a significant contribution in advancing the Government’s Reconstruction and Development Programme, Black Economic Empowerment and the promotion of women and rural communities.

On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I express our collective sense of loss at the passing of this fine daughter of Africa and Princess of the Qawukeni Royal House. Our sincere condolences are offered to the family and the Royal House, and we thank them for the privilege of sharing in the illustrious life of this teacher, politician and selfless community worker.

Funeral arrangements will be announced after consultations with the family.

“Hamba Kahle Manyawuza!”
