President Thabo Mbeki extends Congratulations to Uganda's President-elect Yoweri Museveni

Tshwane - President Thabo Mbeki today, Monday 27 February 2006, extended his congratulations to Uganda's President-elect Yoweri Museveni following the outcome of the recently held general elections.

In his message of support, President Mbeki said " The Government and people of South Africa join the international community in welcoming the outcome of the recently held Presidential and Parliamentary elections in your country, the first since the introduction of the multiparty democracy.

"In this regard, we note and welcome the determination by the African Union that, despite difficulties, the elections were conducted in calm and peaceful manner which accorded the people of Uganda the opportunity to freely express their democratic right.

"Consequently, we appeal to all participants to accept the outcome of this democratic process as a true reflection of the democratic will of the people of Uganda.

"We remain convinced that the new Ugandan government will use the mandate given by the people of Uganda to continue pursuit of democracy, peace and sustainable development as part of continental efforts to consolidate the African agenda," concluded President Mbeki.
