President Thabo Mbeki to Attend Inauguration of Ugandan President
Yoweri Museveni Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki will attend
the inauguration of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala, Uganda, on Friday
12 May 2006.
President Thabo Mbeki's attendance at this Presidential inauguration
comes within the context of South Africa's commitment to strengthen relations
with all African countries with a view to consolidating the African developmental
agenda. In his message of support following the announcement of the February
2006 election results, President Mbeki said, "The Government and people of
South Africa join the international community in welcoming the outcome of the
recently held Presidential and Parliamentary elections in your country, the first
since the introduction of the multiparty democracy. "In this regard,
we note and welcome the determination by the African Union that, despite difficulties,
the elections were conducted in calm and peaceful manner which afforded the people
of Uganda the opportunity to freely express their democratic right. "Consequently,
we appeal to all participants to accept the outcome of this democratic process
as a true reflection of the democratic will of the people of Uganda. "We
remain convinced that the new Ugandan government will use the mandate given by
the people of Uganda to continue the pursuit of democracy, peace and sustainable
development as part of continental efforts to consolidate the African agenda,"
concluded President Mbeki. President Mbeki will return to South Africa on
