South Africa to Donate Funds to Victims of Hurricane Katrina

Tshwane - In a gesture of solidarity and support, the South African government will be donating an amount of R2 million to victims of Hurricane Katrina at a function at Howard University, Washington, United States of America scheduled for Wednesday, 11 January 2006.

The donation will be made by South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in a function organised by the Howard University in honour of the victims of the Hurricane which devastated a number of coastal cities in the United States of America last year.

Following the devastation of the Hurricane, Howard University has instituted a programme to assist students through which each student will be awarded US$1000.

The University has, in addition begun admitting students from the affected regions of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi Counties through a streamlined enrollment process.

Minister Dlamini Zuma will depart from South Africa on Sunday, 8 January 2006 for Washington.
