PAPER NO 34 OF 21 OCTOBER 2005 MR D H M GIBSON (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER
OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: Whether, following the UN 2005 World Summit - High-level
Plenary Meeting of the 60th Session of the General Assembly, the Government has
a new strategy to lobby for reform of the Security Council; if not, why not; if
so, what steps will she take in this regard?

REPLY: Yes.
While the 2005 World Summit accepted that it was not possible to arrive
at a decision on the reform of the UN Security Council in September 2005, the
Summit's Outcome Document expresses support for the early reform of the Security
Council as an essential element of the overall UN reform effort.
South
Africa's position on United Nations reform has been closely co-ordinated with
the relevant African Union positions. To this end, South Africa's position on
Security Council reform is aligned with and expressed through the African Common
Position. We continue to lobby countries of the world on this matter.
