Status on the Talks that the South African Embassy in the Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC) held with a Company NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR
WRITTEN REPLY QUESTION NO: 642 PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL
QUESTION PAPER NO: 16 OF 9 JUNE 2006 Dr P W A Mulder (FF Plus) to
ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs:
(1) Whether, in March 2006, the
South African Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) held talks with
a certain company (name furnished) regarding the possible use of the company's
services at the embassy; if so, (a) what is the nature of the services that the
company would possibly deliver to the embassy, (b) who took the decision that
the embassy would not make use of the company's services and (c) what was the
reason for this decision;
(2) Whether the Embassy at the time of these
discussions had information as to the possibility that the company was in the
DRC to operate as mercenaries and threaten the government of Joseph Kabila; if
so,
(3) Whether the embassy discussed this possibility with the company;
if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details? N797E REPLY: 1.
