QUESTION NO: 736

PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 19 OF 23 JUNE 2006

Mr W J Seremane (DA) to ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Whether the Government is putting any mechanisms in place to ensure that money given to the Sudanese government for the attainment of peace is used for food and medicine and not for the arsenal and equipment of the military; if not, why not; if so, what mechanisms?

REPLY:

South Africa does not contribute any funds to the Government of Sudan.

However, South Africa, as a member of the AU and the UN does contribute financial and human resources to humanitarian agencies who are currently engaged in the Sudan. Therefore the management of these resources falls under the ambit of these agencies.
