President Thabo Mbeki to Host Prime Minister of Côte D'Ivoire
Guillaume Soro for Discussions Cape Town - South African President Thabo
Mbeki will on Wednesday 20 June 2007 host the Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire
Guillaume Soro for discussions at Tuynhuys in Cape Town. President Mbeki
will host Prime Minister Soro within the context of South Africa's priority to
consolidate peace, security and stability in Côte d'Ivoire. Accordingly,
discussions between President Mbeki and Prime Minister Soro are expected to focus
on the implementation of the "Political Agreement" concluded on 4 March
2007 in Ouagadougou between President Gbagbo and Guillaume Soro under the mediation
of ECOWAS Chairman, President Blaise Compaore. The Ouagadougou Political
Agreement on Cote d'Ivoire encapsulates elements of both United Nations Security
Council Resolution 1721 and President Gbagbo's Five Point Plan and seeks to address
the following issues: national dialogue with the armed opposition; the disarmament
and the reunification of the country; the cancellation of the confidence zone;
creation of a National Civic Service; and the establishment of an Aid Program
for the return of the displaced war victims. The successful implementation
of this agreement will pave the way for the holding of general elections in Côte
d'Ivoire. Prime Minister Soro is expected to depart from South Africa on
Thursday 21 June 2007.
