President and Mrs Mbeki Extend Condolences to Cuban Acting President

Pretoria - South African President and Mrs Thabo Mbeki today Thursday 21 June 2007 extended the heartfelt condolences of the South African government and people to Cuban Acting President Raul Castro following the death of his wife Vilma Espin Guillois on Wednesday 20 June 2007.

In a message of support to Acting President Raul Castro, President Mbeki said, "Please accept the sincerest condolences on the passing of your wife and partner Vilma Espin following a lengthy illness."

"Your late wife will always be remembered as a heroine of the struggle for liberation and an outstanding combatant of the Rebel Army who worked tirelessly for Cuba's freedom."

"Her contribution and outstanding commitment to the fight against social injustices including the emancipation of women and the defense of the rights of children will be greatly missed."

"The thoughts and prayers of the South African government and people are with the government and people of Cuba, friends, family and loved ones of Vilma."

"Our hearts pour out to you, the government and people of Cuba during this time of national mourning," concluded President Mbeki."
