Deputy Minister Pahad to attend International Working Group Meeting on Côte d'Ivoire

Pretoria - South African Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad will depart for Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire on Wednesday 10 January 2007 where he will lead the South African delegation to the 12th International Working Group (IWG) on Côte d'Ivoire scheduled for Friday 12 January 2007.

Deputy Minister Pahad will attend this meeting within the context of South Africa's commitment to assist the leadership and people of Côte d'Ivoire find a political solution to their current challenges.

The IWG is expected to discuss current developments in the Côte d'Ivoire peace process and progress made regarding the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1721 including the disarmament and demobilisation of the militia, the identification process, restructuring of the security forces as well as the preparations for the elections.

The full consolidation of peace and stability depends upon the concerted effort by all Ivorian parties to implement Resolution 1721 as well as the other resolutions and agreements.

Deputy Minister Pahad is expected to return to South Africa on Saturday 13 January 2007.
