Minister Dlamini Zuma puts on hold the Listing of Two South
Africans by the UNSC Pretoria - South African Foreign Minister, Dr. Nkosazana
Dlamini Zuma today, Wednesday 24 January 2007 directed the SA Permanent Mission
in New York to place on hold the names of the two South Africans whose names have
been submitted to the UNSC by the US authorities for alleged links to Al Qaeda. Minister
Dlamini Zuma is of the conviction that the matter needs to be discussed further
in bilaterals with the US authorities. The US government had on Friday
19 January 2007 submitted the names of the two South Africans to the 1267 Al Qaeda
and Taliban Sanctions Committee of the UN. In terms of procedure the Chairperson
of the 1267 Sanctions Committee on receipt of the names distributes the list to
all 15 members of the Sanctions Committee. Following this distribution of the
names, countries are given 5-days in which to indicate whether they intend objecting
to the listing or not. It is in this context that Minister Dlamini Zuma,
having applied her mind to the matter, directed the South African Permanent Mission
at the UN to place on hold the listing of the names of the two South Africans
on the UNSC list. The implication of putting on hold the names of the two
South Africans is that the names cannot be included in the consolidated UNSC list
but will be added to the list of holds. Issued by Ronnie Mamoepa at 082-990-4853 Private
