QUESTION NO: 364 – NO2360E

PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 35 OF 9 OCTOBER 2007

MRS SM CAMERER (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

Whether the Government has considered calling for the mediation between the Zimbabwean government and opposition parties to take place before the date of the European Union-Africa summit in Portugal in December 2007 to ensure the success of this summit; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

REPLY:

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) mediation process in Zimbabwe which is facilitated by South Africa is an ongoing process that should not be linked to unrelated international events such as the EU – Africa Summit.

The EU – Africa Summit is important and its success should not be linked to events in one country.
