MR LB LABUSCHAGNE (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

(1) (a) How many South African citizens are employed by the United Nations (UN) and its agencies and,

(b) in which UN bodies are these persons employed;

(2) whether there is a country quota for employment by the UN and its agencies; if not, why not; if so,

(a) what is the South African quota and

(b) to what extent is it taken up? N1409E

 Question 1 :

 

  • 102 employees of South African origin / nationality.

 

  • The South Africans are employed in the following UN agencies and bodies;

Department of Political Affairs (DPA)

Department of Disarmament Affairs (DDA)

Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO)

UN Habitat

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

Department of Public Information (DPI)

Office of Human Resource Management (OHRM)

Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)

Office of Legal Affairs (OLA)

United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON)

Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS)

Department of Safety and Security (DSS)

Executive Office of the Secretary General (EOSG)

Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)

Economic Commission for Europe (ECE)

Office of Planning, Programming, Budget and Accounts (OPPBA)

Office of Central Support Services (OCSS)

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)

Question 2 :

2(a) In terms of the geographic representation for South Africa, the quota is 7-17 persons.
