South African Update 2 on the Situation in Mumbai

Pretoria- The South African Government joins the international community in expressing an outright condemnation of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday 26 November which left a number of people dead, wounded and others taken hostage.

In this regard, President Kgalema Motlanthe on behalf of the government and people of South Africa has extended the heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India and in particular those families who lost their loved ones.

In this context, the government confirms that the Consulate-General has successfully contacted the two South African Revenue officials who were in the vicinity of the attacks last night. Earlier we had mistakenly reported that the two were from the Reserve Bank.

The Government remains in close contact with the management of the South African Airways with regard to their air crew in Mumbai which has all been accounted for. The government reiterates the call for South Africans to contact the Foreign Affairs Consular Section in Pretoria at 012-351-1000 regarding their relatives in Mumbai .

The South African Consulate-General in Mumbai continues to render consular assistance to South Africans currently in Mumbai.
