Minister Dlamini Zuma to chair the SADC Council of Ministers Meeting, Thursday 14 August Sandton Convention Centre

Sandton- South African Foreign Minister, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will on Thursday 14 August 2008 assume the Chairpersonship of the SADC council of Ministers on behalf of SA scheduled for the Sandton Convention Centre.

South Africa will be assuming the Chairpersonship of the Regional organisation taking over from Zambia for a period of year. In this regard, South Africa’s focus for the year will be the restoration and strengthening SADC political unity and cohesion; Intensifying regional infrastructure development and deepening regional economic integration.

The SADC Council of Ministers, which was preceded by the SADC Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration as well as the SADC Senior Officials meeting, will deliberate upon a number of political issues as part of preparations for the forthcoming SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for Saturday-Sunday 16-17 August at the Sandton Convention Centre. In this regard, President Thabo Mbeki will ascend to the Chairpersonship of the SADC Summit of Heads of state and Government.

The SADC Council of Ministers will accordingly deliberate upon and make recommendations to the Heads of State and Government on:

  • Report of the Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration
  • Continental integration- African Union and Nepad
  • Progress Report on the Financing, Design and Construction of the new SADC Headquarters
  • Report on the implementation of the Job Evaluation Exercise
  • SADC Annual Report
  • Report of the Integrated Committee of Ministers
  • Report of the Executive Secretary
  • Status of Member States Contribution
  • As well as consideration of the Heads of State and Government Agenda.

The SADC Council of Ministers meeting will conclude its business on Friday 15 August ahead of the scheduled SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government from Saturday-Sunday 16-17 August 2008.
