Key Points on the extended Leave of Absence of the National Commissioner of Police, Mr. Jackie Selebi

THE PRESIDENT HAS DECIDED TO PUT THE COMMISSSIONER OF POLICE ON EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE.

 On the basis of continuing reports on investigations by the National Prosecution Authority followed by their decision to charge the National Commissioner of Police Mr Jackie Selebi, President Thabo Mbeki has decided to put the National Commissioner of Police on extended leave of absence.

Here in follows key points on this matter to assist missions.

THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF POLICE HAS BEEN PUT ON LEAVE OF ABSENCE

  • The President has decided to put the National Commissioner of Police Jackie Selebi on extended leave of absence with effect from 12 January 2008,
  • The NPA has advised that it will proceed with charges against the National Commissioner soon
  • Deputy Commissioner Tim Williams has now been appointed the Acting National Commissioner of Police with effect from 12 January 2008.

MEETING WITH POLICE MANAGEMENT

  • The President met with all the leadership of the police –both National and Provincial on Saturday 12 January 2008 to brief them about th3e decision of the NPA to charge Commissioner Selebi these developments.
  • The country’s security and safety institutions will continue to function without any hindrance from any party.
  • The police management will remain at their post and will continue to do their work as required by the law and the constitution.
  • The police management will extend such assistance to the National Prosecuting Authorities as may be requested of them

RESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW

  • President emphasised the importance of respecting the country’s legal process; that the law must take its course without any hindrance from any party.
  • We thus assure all South Africans that this decision will not impact on the safety and security of citizens and that the work of government will continue unhindered.
