South African Government condemns attempt on President Ramos-Horta’s life
Pretoria – The South African government joins the international community in condemning in the strongest possible terms the attempts on the life of the President of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta, during an attack at his residence on 11 February 2008.
The South African government also condemns the attack on the convoy of the Prime Minister of Timor-Lester, Xanana Gusmao.
To this end, the South African government calls on the government of Timor-Leste to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act, and furthermore calls upon all people in Timor-Leste not to allow extremists to derail efforts aimed at the consolidation of democracy in their country.
The South African government supports the government and people of Timor-Leste in their continued efforts at strengthening democracy and maintaining stability in their country.
