Media Statement on Technicians detained in Zimbabwe, 7 April 2008

Pretoria –The Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to confirm that the two detained South African technicians in Zimbabwe, Messrs Sipho Maseko and Abdulla Gaibee appeared in court in Harare this afternoon after which they were granted on bail.  The Department of Foreign Affairs is unable to confirm the two charges brought against them at this time.  They will again appear in court on 8 and 11 April 2008. 

Upon release Mr Sipho Maseko is due for admission to hospital on a medical related condition, following the intervention of the South African Embassy in Harare.  Mr Maseko is in a stable condition.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and the South African Embassy in Harare will continue to provide consular assistance to the two South African citizens.
