PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. .. OF 9 NOVEMBER 2007

Dr P W A Mulder (FF Plus) to ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Whether any Members of Parliament associated with the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) have received any payment for subsistence and travel costs from the PAP; if so, how many have received payment and (ii) what amounts was paid out to each one of them? NW2800E

REPLY:

  1. As regards the Pan-African Parliament the primary role of the Department of Foreign Affairs is to ensure South Africa’s compliance with its obligations regarding the agreement entered into with the African Union to host the PAP. This includes the provision of an appropriate, well equipped parliamentary complex to house this august body. The Host-Country Agreement also commits us to ensuring a conducive environment for the smooth running of Parliamentary sessions through the provision of transport, ICT and security solutions during the sessions.
  2. Whilst the Department monitors and follows with interest the proceedings of the PAP, particularly the sessions, it is, however, not involved in its administration matters. It is, therefore, not privy to any monies, if any, that accrued to any of the Members of the Pan-African Parliament, including the five South African MPs nominated from our National Assembly.
