Deputy President Motlanthe to lead South African Delegation to ILO Conference

PretoriaSouth African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Saturday 13 June 2009 depart for Geneva, Switzerland where he will lead the South African delegation to the 98th session of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conference currently underway.

Deputy President Motlanthe is also expected to participate in the first Summit of the Global Jobs Crisis convened on the margins of the 98th session of the ILO which comes within the context of the economic and financial crisis currently facing the global community. 

Outcomes of this Summit will have implications for the government’s commitment to eradicate poverty through job creation and economic growth.

The ILO Conference which is scheduled to conclude on Friday 19 June 2009 is expected to deliberate on:

  • Consequences of the global economic and financial crisis on employment;
  • The effect of HIV and Aids in the workplace;
  • Gender equality in the workplace.

The Conference will also receive reports from the Chairperson of the Governing Body and the Director-General; as well as the Global Report under the Follow-up to the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work

Deputy President Motlanthe is expected to return to South Africa on Wednesday 17 June 2009.
