Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim meets Union of Myanmar Representative, 25 May 2009.

Pretoria: Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ebrahim Ebrahim met with the Ambassador Designate of the Union of Myanmar, Mr Tin OO Lwin, on Monday 25 May, to express the South African government’s continued concern about the re-arrest of the Leader of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Deputy Minister Ebrahim re-iterated the government’s call for Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate and unconditional release, normalising a political climate conducive to free and fair elections.

The South African government would like to see Myanmar returning to civilian rule, with a multi-party and functioning democracy. South Africa stands ready to assist in its transition, and proposed that a delegation visit Myanmar to facilitate a negotiation process amongst the various political parties.
