South Africa joins the Republic of Congo in celebrating their 50th Anniversary of Independence
Today, 15 August 2010, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the freedom of the Republic of the Congo (Brazaville) from colonial rule. The President of South Africa, H.E. Jacob G. Zuma, would like to, on behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, congratulate President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, the Government and the people of the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville). The president has nominated the Minister in the Presidency, H.E. Collins Chabane, to represent the country at this august ceremony. The day’s official ceremony began with a parade for military and civilians. The highlights of today’s events include the transmission of Torch from generation fiftieth to generation 2010 and as well as a visit to the children born on August 15, 2010, by Congo’s First Lady, Mrs Antoinette Sassou-Nguesso, and a state banquet hosted by the President and the First Lady.
The celebrations that started on 28 July 2010 will come to an end on 16 August 2010 when Minister Chabane will be headed back home. Since then, various events were hosted that included the presentation by President Sassou-Nguesso on the State of the Nation, before the Parliament in joint session; National Forum of Women of the Congo under the Patronage of Mrs Antoinette Sassou-Nguesso, wife of the President Nguesso; Gastronomy competition called "Pot of Gold"; presentation of the theater piece "50 years of independence, a fate Shared" by the National Troupe; opening of first module of the Airport followed by the unveiling of the column of independence; launch ceremony of the International Half Marathon; election of "Miss fiftieth"; and an evening of fashion's fiftieth anniversary.
South Africa formalized their diplomatic relations with the Republic of Congo (Brazaville) on 22 March 1993 and the two countries enjoy sound bilateral relations.
